The Independent Living Resource Center is seeking an Independent Living Advocate to be a leading member of our team to accomplish our mission of promoting independent living and full access for individuals with disabilities through advocacy, education and action in our communities.

Site Location: Santa Maria Office
Hourly Rate: $16.00/hr

Job Dutities & Responsibilities

  • Assist the public, in person, on the phone, and via email acting as initial point of contact for consumers with disabilities, their families, and the community
  • Provide information regarding disability related resources and services and make referrals between consumers and community contacts for appropriate assistance/services
  • Provide direct services or connection to ILRC team mates related to independent living skills training, peer support, housing assistance, personal assistance, benefits, advocacy, employment, etc to individuals of all ages, disabilities, and income levels
  • Maintain Personal Assistant (PA) Registry; provide PA management training to consumers, interview and screen potential PAs, refer potential PAs to consumers
  • Train consumers in housing seeking skills and access to housing benefits/programs
  • Guide consumers in accessible transportation process
  • Assist consumers in transitioning from nursing facilities to more independent settings
  • Represent ILRC at community events
  • Conduct outreach activities, with an emphasis on underserved populations and youth with disabilities
  • Plan and participate in group mentorship, quarterly workshops, and offsite opportunities promoting self-esteem building and the expression of youth individual goals for independence
  • Provide information and referral (I&R) about Assistive Technology (AT) issues to consumers, community partners, and others utilizing in-house resources and consultation with other independent living centers and the AT Network
  • Research, gather, and organize information on a wide range of AT topics
  • Assist consumers in securing devices, seeking funding, and resources for AT as appropriate
  • Serve on committees and make connections to promote system advocacy
  • Conduct consumer intake procedures, draft written Independent Living Plan (ILP) or obtain waiver, monitor, follow-up, and be an active member in consumer’s goal progress
  • Document and update consumer database and files on a regular basis
  • Provide Spanish language access to consumers by translating materials and appointments with other staff
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and any recommended trainings
  • Promote harmonious working relationships, participate fully as a member of working team, conduct ILRC business in a professional manner

Required Qualifications

  • Experience working with the public providing related services
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Spanish
  • Ethical work practices; dependable honest, team-oriented
  • Motivating interest in disability empowerment/independent living field
  • Active listening, good communication skills, willingness to learn
  • Reliable transportation and ability to travel throughout the tri-counties as needed
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office and internet research

Preferred Qualifications

  • Personal experience with disability
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL)
